pharmacology
Cerebral metabolism promoting effect
The brain mainly functions by using glucose from the blood as an energy source. Gamma-aminobutyric acid enhances hexokinase activity required at the entry point of the TCA cycle and promotes carbohydrate metabolism. In addition, when 50 mg/kg of gamma-aminobutyric acid was intravenously administered to dogs with experimental brain injury, increases in cerebral blood flow and cerebral oxygen supply were observed.
